The Possum Sisters: A Legacy of Storytelling Through Art
At Australia.Gallery in Cairns, we are proud to showcase the works of Gabriella and Michelle Possum Nungurrayi, two esteemed artists whose creations continue the rich artistic heritage of their father, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri.
Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri: A Founding Figure
Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri (1932โ2002) was a pivotal figure in the Western Desert art movement. As one of the founding artists of the Papunya Tula Artists collective, his innovative use of traditional motifs and storytelling techniques brought Aboriginal art to the forefront of the Australian and international art scenes. His legacy is preserved not only through his own works but also through the artistic endeavors of his daughters.
Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi: Bridging Tradition and Contemporary Expression
Born in 1967 in Papunya, Gabriella is the eldest daughter of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri. Immersed in art from a young age, she began painting under her father’s guidance, developing a distinctive style that blends traditional Dreaming narratives with contemporary techniques. Her works often depict themes such as “Seven Sisters Dreaming” and “My Grandmother’s Country,” characterized by intricate dot patterns and vibrant color palettes.
Gabriella’s art has garnered international acclaim. Notably, her work was presented to Queen Elizabeth II during the Chelsea Flower Show in 2008 and is part of the Royal Collection. She has also participated in significant exhibitions, including the Vivid Sydney festival in 2016, where her art was projected onto the Sydney Opera House sails.
Michelle Possum Nungurrayi: Continuing the Artistic Lineage
Michelle, born in 1970 at Mt. Allan, is the younger daughter of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Emily Nakamarra. Like her sister, Michelle was deeply influenced by her father’s artistry and teachings. Her works often explore the “Women’s Dreaming” and other ancestral stories, utilizing traditional iconography to convey the cultural narratives of her Anmatyerre heritage.
Michelle’s art has been exhibited widely, both in Australia and internationally. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions and has held solo shows, contributing significantly to the contemporary Aboriginal art movement .
