In The Gathering Series, John Grasso presents the crowd not as a collection of individual portraits, but as a shifting, animated field of human presence. Hundreds of loosely articulated figures fill the canvas, their bodies reduced to expressive strokes, gestures and fragments of colour. Faces emerge only briefly before dissolving back into the larger movement of the crowd.
The painting is alive with a restless rhythm. creating a visual energy that moves continuously across the surface. Grasso allows the figures to overlap and merge, creating an atmosphere in which individuality and collective identity exist simultaneously.
Rather than describing a particular gathering or event, the work evokes the universal experience of being among others—the density of bodies, the anonymity of the crowd, the sense of movement and the subtle tension between belonging and separation. The repeated human forms become almost abstract marks, transforming the crowd into a visual landscape of gesture and emotion.
The physicality of the oil paint is central to the work. Rapid, gestural strokes build the figures while allowing the underlying canvas to remain visible, giving the surface a sense of immediacy and movement. The accumulation of marks suggests that the crowd is constantly forming, dispersing and reforming before the viewer’s eyes.
The Gathering Series reflects Grasso’s continuing interest in the human figure as both individual presence and collective experience. Here, the crowd becomes more than a subject: it becomes a metaphor for contemporary life, where countless individual lives occupy the same physical and emotional space.

Artist Statement:
My paintings are an exploration of colour, movement and the physical act of painting. I am interested in what happens when layers of paint, marks and colour interact rather than being completely controlled.
I work intuitively, allowing the painting to develop through repeated application, scraping, drawing and repainting. Colour is central to the process. Strong contrastscan create energy, while darker passages provide depth and allow brighter colours to emerge.
My surroundings in Far North Queensland, my interest in Japanese culture and my experience with martial arts have all contributed to the way I approach painting. I am interested in balance, discipline and movement, but also in the freedom that comes from allowing a painting to evolve.
I want the viewer to encounter the work directly—to move through its colours, textures and marks and form their own response.
My practice draws upon Japanese culture, Monet, Van Gogh, Joan Mitchell and Indigenous art, as well as martial arts and Samurai ethics.
