Lesley Wengembo, born in 1997 in Goroka in Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands Province, is a contemporary Indigenous artist known for his breathtaking hyper-realistic portraits. Raised in Port Moresby, Lesley began drawing in his teenage years and soon discovered his passion for visual storytelling rooted in cultural preservation.
Preserving Culture Through Portraiture
Lesley’s work focuses on elderly members of his community, painted in traditional attire. His intent is not just artistic — it’s cultural documentation. Through his art, he captures the dignity, strength, and stories of his ancestors, preserving what remains alive in the faces and expressions of his subjects.

Archibald & Brisbane Portrait Prize Finalist
Lesley has made a name for himself on the national stage, becoming a two-time entrant in the prestigious Archibald Prize, and a Brisbane Portrait Prize finalist in both 2020 and 2023. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the National Art School in Sydney in 2021, refining his talent while staying true to his cultural roots.
The “Seven Faces of Mother Earth” Project
One of Lesley’s most ambitious works to date is Seven Faces of Mother Earth, a cross-disciplinary art project combining painting, poetry, music, and film. The goal is to offer a multi-sensory experience of culture and storytelling, reflecting the interconnectedness of life, art, and the Earth itself.
