Acrylic on canvas

Born in Papunya in 1974, Bob Gibson Tjungarrayi later moved with his family to Tjukurla during the 1980s Papunya Tula movement, a period when many Ngaanyatjarra people returned to their ancestral homelands. His mother, Mary Gibson, a respected Tjarlirli artist, is from Kulkurta, while his father’s Country lies near Patjarr.

Bob started painting with Tjarlirli Art in 2007, quickly establishing a distinctive approach defined by vibrant colors, energetic forms, and an unmistakable sense of freedom. His work breathes new life into tjukurpa stories, blending cultural tradition with a bold contemporary vision.

A lively and well-loved figure in his community, Bob is known for his generosity and strong family connections. He is an avid Sydney Swans fan and enjoys all kinds of music, particularly performances by local bush bands.

A Bob Gibson painting is an experience in itself—playful, dynamic, and full of movement. His canvases are alive with striking shapes, expressive brushwork, and confident storytelling, each piece offering a powerful reimagining of Country. Through his unique artistic practice, Bob navigates the interwoven layers of culture, history, and contemporary expression, creating works that are both deeply rooted and refreshingly innovative.
