Born in 1971, Carolanne Ken is a distinguished artist from Kaltjiti (formerly Fregon), located in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of South Australia. She was raised in Kaltjiti and later completed her education at Ingle Farm High School in Adelaide in 1986. Carolanne began her artistic career in 2004 at Kaltjiti Arts, initially assisting with studio management before dedicating herself fully to painting.
Carolanne’s artwork is deeply influenced by her heritage, particularly the Minyma Malilu story, an ancestral tale passed down by her maternal grandmother. The story of Malilu, a strong and determined woman traveling through the lands to find her daughter, is reflected in Carolanne’s paintings through circular forms that represent Malilu’s cave and the paths she traveled. This story holds great personal and cultural significance for Carolanne, as it connects her to her grandmother’s country.
Known for her unique blend of painterly brushwork and fine dotting techniques, Carolanne’s style captures the spiritual essence of her homeland and the stories that have been passed down through generations. Her work is widely celebrated, and she has exhibited in various prestigious settings, including a 2019 projection of her art on the Sydney Opera House as part of the Badu Gili light festival.
Carolanne is a highly respected artist, whose work continues to contribute to the cultural richness and artistic dialogue of the APY Lands and beyond.
