Kutini: The Cassowary
A Shadow Keeper of Our Ancestors
Kutini is our language word for Cassowary. These wild Kutini walk through our country, living in the deep forests out of sight. My grandparents told me when I was growing up that Cassowaries are territorial but also move quickly to avoid being seen. To spot them, you need to have good eyes.
The Dreamtime Story
My grandparents shared a story from Dreamtime about a Cassowary chasing other Cassowaries for hours until the chasing bird grew tired. It then went to a waterhole for a cold drink and saw its shadow, realizing it had been chasing its own shadow the entire time. Cassowaries are considered the shadow keepers of our Ancestors.
